Sustainability is a high-stakes game for the commercial property sector. While concrete and steel are not going to go green in a hurry, big developers are finding new ways to make their buildings more sustainable.

Emissions resulting from the construction, maintenance and demolition of buildings is rising, according to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, with construction materials equating for between 30 million and 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

However, property developers and landlords of CBD buildings are moving quickly to address the problem, building new, environmentally friendly buildings and upgrading older ones to meet the demands of tenants who want their offices to be cleaner and greener.
