Trendspek’s 3D software enabled virtual inspections to support the landmark reopening of the historical White Bay Power Station in Sydney Australia. A digital replica of the asset was created and inspected, minimising safety risks and providing accurate data for capital works planning.
3D Precision Reality Twin created in 24hrs
Removed safety risk of physical inspections
Millimetre accuracy from over 20 million data points captured
60% cost savings compared to manual labour costs
“There were many hard-to-reach areas that required repair and certain locations that were physically inaccessible. Using drones and Trendspek minimised the need to bring in mobile plant equipment and mitigated the associated risks. After giving login access to contractors, we could use Trendspek to measure the height of various parts of the asset, allowing them to analyse what type of access methodology they may need to adopt to complete the conservation works.”
Placemaking NSW
Background
White Bay Power Station in Sydney was constructed between 1912 and 1917 to power the tram system and the later rail network. Decommissioned in 1984, it was unused for almost 40 years. In 2021, a project team of specialist consultants were engaged by Placemaking NSW to inspect the dilapidated structure to prepare the power station for adaptive reuse as a cultural facility.
Solution implemented
Trendspek’s Precision Reality Twins and virtual 3D environment enabled them to assess hard-to-reach areas, minimise safety risks, and collect accurate data for thorough maintenance planning. What began as a need for a traditional report and photos, led to the ability to virtually fly around to look at different aspects of the asset that were challenging to physically reach and inspect. On a site that requires such extensive conservation works, providing this ability to easily inspect out of the way areas was invaluable for the project team.
Outcome delivered
Trendspek removed the safety risk of physical inspections by delivering a highly interactive 3D model with detail down to 1mm, at 60% of the cost of a traditional inspection. Taking only 2-days to capture the asset, the 3D Precision Reality Twin model was created in 24-hrs using +20 million data points. Placemaking NSW and White Bay Power Station project consultants were able to make accurate assessments of the asset’s condition and confident decisions when planning the development work required.
