NSW Ports: How they use Trendspek to inspect port infrastructure
“That’s one of the real benefits of Trendspek – accessing those hard-to-reach areas. For example, our bulk liquid pipelines run under berths in tidal zones and formerly required boat access. Now, it’s all available in the model.”
Ashley Rangott, Asset Manager, NSW Ports
“We weren’t doing this five years ago, but it has since changed things significantly. This technology is helping us work smarter, and it’s to the benefit of our company and the broader industry.”
Maruf Akhtar, Asset Systems Manager, NSW Ports
Background
NSW Ports operates critical trade gateways including Port Botany and Port Kembla, facilitating over a quarter of Australia’s container traffic. Maintaining the structural integrity and operational readiness of marine infrastructure is vital to supporting Australia’s logistics and supply chain continuity. The ports authority sought a smarter solution to manage inspections and maintenance, particularly across hard-to-access assets like wharves, piles, and loading equipment, without relying solely on traditional manual methods.
Solution implemented
To support safer and more efficient inspection methods, NSW Ports partnered with Trendspek to deploy millimetre-accurate 3D modelling technology and life across selected sites. This enables engineers and asset managers to remotely inspect conditions, annotate issues, and overlay historical data via a cloud-based platform that centralises asset information and facilitates collaborative decision-making across teams.
Outcome delivered
The deployment of Trendspek’s platform resulted in a 70% reduction in the time required to complete inspections, while enhancing visibility and documentation across NSW Ports’ asset base. The ability to virtually detect, log, and communicate defects also eliminated safety risks and reduced the need for physical site access. This digital solution has enabled NSW Ports to extend asset life, reduce maintenance costs, and align inspection programs with real-time condition insights – driving more proactive, data-informed asset strategies.
Trendspek’s collaboration with NSW Ports reflects Taronga Group’s mission to support technologies that enhance the performance, safety, and sustainability of critical infrastructure. By enabling faster, data-driven asset management through advanced digital modelling, this project aligns with Taronga Group’s vision of a more efficient, resilient built environment supported by scalable innovation.
