SPACECUBE: Monash Health COVID Resus Facility
“The way we deliver care to critically unwell patients I think will change forever in emergency medicine. There’s also a specific engineering flow called negative pressure, I didn’t think they’d manage to achieve it, but they managed to achieve this and a lot more. From the nurses bay you can see into every single cubicle. There’s also facilities upstairs, a clean utility, storage space, a tea room for staff with lockers, facilities and somewhere to take a break. I have never seen anything like this before, it’s just amazing what Monash Health and SPACECUBE were able to achieve.”
Dr. Rachel Rosler, Director of Emergency Medicine, Monash Medical Centre
“From a personal perspective, it was great working with Carlo and the SPACECUBE team to provide a quick solution as the COVID-19 pandemic escalates in the community, and to provide this level of care for the Monash Health community is a great outcome. I was proud to work on this project to create an end product that’s going towards a great community cause.”
Alison Gartrell, Director, Program Advisory, Aurecon
Background
When the pandemic arrived on Australian shores, timing and preparation was key to ensure the smooth running of the healthcare system, and to ensure frontline workers had the facilities they required. Monash Medical Centre required a sustainable and quickly installed temporary space for additional resuscitation beds and staff facilities.
Solution implemented
SPACECUBE’s flat-packable, modular structures were deployed for Australia’s first COVID-19 RESUS medical facility at Monash Health. Within one week of being briefed, the team had finalised the design, received approvals and begun installation of the RESUS Unit by reusing SPACECUBE’s versatile infrastructure (previously at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and Melbourne Cup Carnival). SPACECUBE installed 25 cubes over 360sqm within 15 hours. The facility spanned across two-levels and housed six negative pressure resuscitation beds; a nurse’s station; medication room; and utilities. SPACECUBE also contributed towards the value of the project by incorporating amenities and a staff break room to support the critical medical team.
Outcome delivered
SPACECUBE’s modular flat-packable design and speedy deployment alleviated pressure off emergency services at Monash Health, providing an additional first-class healthcare facility as an extension to the medical centre. Monash Health now has a future-proof solution ready to install for future outbreaks or other situations where extended capacity is required.
