““By adopting the Enertainer for our project, we managed to achieve significant reduction in carbon emissions. Due to the lack of direct grid power to the site, we employed a hybrid solution consisting of 2 Enertainers; recharged by smaller diesel generators rather than having to employ 3 large diesel generators. The power produced was stable and reliable. The operation of the Enertainer was also fuss-free and required minimal maintenance throughout the project duration.”
Andrea Ho, Development Manager, ESR
Background
Completed in February 2024, ESR Singapore 1 is a joint venture project between ESR Group, Asia-Pacific’s leading New Economy real estate manager and one of the largest listed real estate investment managers globally, and PGIM Real Estate.
The BCA Green Mark Platinum certified project is a modern five-storey, ramp-up logistics facility spanning 64,490 square meters, with POKKA Logistics as the anchor tenant. It is designed with sustainability in mind, boasting green features including a solar power rooftop plant and EV charging facilities.
The challenge
The construction site needed to power three large tower cranes and mast climbers, but without direct grid access, it had to primarily rely on two 350 kVA and one 200 kVA conventional diesel generators. This dependency led to various issues, including high carbon emissions, frequent maintenance of the diesel generators, and additional noise pollution and traffic congestion from refueling vehicles. With ESG being a top priority for ESR, these were not ideal.
Solution implemented
To address these challenges, ESR partnered with Ampd Energy to implement Battery Energy Storage Solutions (ESS), replacing the existing on-site diesel generators with two Enertainers. These were deployed through the nine-month construction period from April to December 2023.
Ampd Energy is driving the global energy transition on construction sites and heavy industries through the creation of state-of-the-art ESS, connectivity software and data science to electrify, connect and optimize the industrial and construction sectors. The Enertainer, a flagship product by Ampd Energy, is a cutting-edge ESS, designed to connect with small grid power and generators, ensuring a consistent and reliable power supply on-site.
Without a grid connection, two 100 kVA diesel generators were used to recharge the Enertainers, downsizing the original two larger (2x 350 kVA and 1x 200 kVA) diesel generators. The deployment of Ampd Enertainers was seamless and required minimal maintenance throughout the project, providing reliable and stable 24/7 power to the equipment onsite.
Outcome delivered
Since their deployment, ESR has observed substantial benefits and cost savings from using the two Enertainers over a 9-month period compared to traditional diesel generators. The company estimates that these hybrid solutions have collectively reduced carbon emissions by 220 tonnes — equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of around 1201 four-room HDB (public housing) apartments in Singapore. Economically, the Enertainers have also cut operating costs by 19%.
During the operation period, the carbon footprint was significantly reduced, and noise pollution was minimized, as the Enertainers are nearly silent, and the diesel generators are only activated automatically for recharging. Productivity was also enhanced – every Enertainer has built-in software, called the Enernet, that is internet-connected 24/7. The Enernet is an advanced and user-friendly online platform which allows project managers to monitor and troubleshoot the ESS remotely in real-time, thereby reducing operational downtime.
