Background
Valiant offers sustainable and innovative furniture rental & property styling solutions nationwide for events, residential, and commercial projects.
Valiant approached Taronga Group’s Advisory to understand the embodied carbon associated with each of their projects when engaging with clients. Following enquiries from clients about how hiring furniture versus buying would reduce their Scope 3 emissions, and pursuing their B-Corp certification, Valiant recognised the need for a clear, data-backed approach to quantify and understand the carbon emissions impact of each project.
A carbon calculator linked to each project order would empower customers to make informed decisions based on their carbon impact and disclose any future Scope 3 impacts of engaging Valiant in their projects.
Solution implemented
Taronga Group’s Advisory team built a bespoke algorithm and carbon emissions table which captured the embodied carbon associated with each piece of furniture hired as a part of each order.
The solution covered:
- Build and freight of the products to Valiant in Australia
- Transport of furniture from port to warehouse, and warehouse to and from the client site
- Calculation of applied carbon emissions based on length of product use by each client
Alongside the algorithm and calculator, Taronga Advisory provided supporting Data Management Guidelines which provided transparency on the calculations, sources and assumptions.
This enabled Valiant to:
- Seamlessly incorporate this into their back-end invoicing system
- Capture and report emissions to clients. This meant carbon emissions across physical items, and travel associated with delivering each order to a customer’s site is captured and reported
- Empower clients to understand and disclose the Scope 3 impact of engaging Valiant
Additionally, the project included consultancy to support with troubleshooting when rolling out the calculator algorithm, and during Valiant’s B-Corp certification process.
Outcome delivered
The calculator is now actively being used by Valiant for reporting to customers and offers a unique value proposition by Valiant to the market.
Valiant customers have transparency on the carbon emissions associated with the hiring of their furniture for particular events and uses when they engage with Valiant.
This tool positions Valiant not only as a service provider but as a strategic partner in helping clients achieve their sustainability and reporting goals.
