PowerStack’s modular, off-grid solar poles enabled fast, flexible deployment of power across multiple BlueScope sites, supporting IoT sensors, remote monitoring and connectivity.
100% off-grid, relocatable power
Reduced installation costs and time
Enhanced security and data connectivity
Low-disruption, concrete-free setup
Installation of solar powered IoT, Central Laboratory, Port Kembla
“We wanted a way to get powered infrastructure up and running in a cost effective and timely way. Ideally in a format that was mobile so we could move it easily and test gear at another site when needed. We’d used PowerStack before so it was the obvious choice for this project.”
Bernie Lawler, Prototyping and Evaluation Technician,
BlueScope Innovation Labs
Background
BlueScope, a leading Australian steel producer, sought innovative ways to improve security, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure flexibility across two key sites in New South Wales. At the BlueScope Innovation Labs, there was a need for fast-deployable security infrastructure to enhance safety, ideally in a format that could be relocated as needed. At the Port Kembla site, the company was expanding its network of IoT environmental monitors and looking for a sustainable way to access power at the optimum height for the IoT gateway’s signal coverage. Whilst grid supply was accessible at both sites, it didn’t meet the flexibility and sustainability requirements for these installations.
Solution implemented
To address these needs, BlueScope partnered with PowerStack to implement two customised and portable solar pole installations. At BlueScope’s Innovation Labs, an 8-metre PowerStack pole was deployed to support an IP camera, a bullet camera, and a 4G industrial router. This off-grid solution could be installed as a ‘fixed’ asset and then moved to another site in future as needed. At Port Kembla, an 8-metre PowerStack unit was installed to support a LoRaWAN gateway and an Atmos41 multi-function weather station, enhancing environmental monitoring and real-time data collection. In both cases, PowerStack’s proprietary concrete-free foundation system enabled fast, machinery-free installation within hours, minimising disruption to site operations.
Outcome delivered
At BlueScope Innovation Labs, site security was improved with real-time camera monitoring and remote connectivity, all powered sustainably through solar energy. At Port Kembla, the elevated LoRaWAN gateway significantly boosted connectivity across the site, supporting a wide array of IoT devices used for monitoring utilities and enabling predictive maintenance strategies. The portable nature of the installations means they can be relocated as BlueScope’s needs change, ensuring long-term value and operational flexibility. The projects exemplify how solar-powered technology can deliver practical, cost-saving outcomes for industrial environments.
This project exemplifies the kind of scalable, technology-driven innovation Taronga Group champions to transform the Real Asset sector. PowerStack’s deployment at BlueScope showcases how clean, mobile infrastructure can drive operational efficiency and resilience – key outcomes aligned with one of Taronga Group’s focuses – climate & resilience technologies that optimise the use of critical resources, reducing negative impacts and building Real Asset resilience.
